As disciples of Jesus, we follow His example of prayer. Jesus would always find a time and a place for prayer He always wanted to be in communion with His Father in heaven, so that He would know the Father's will. His disciples asked Him about how to pray and in Matthew 6: 5 to 6: 14 it explains what prayer is and how to pray. 1/ What is another word for communion? 2/ What did Jesus want to know? 3/ What did His disciples want to know? He also told them not be a hypocrites to say one thing and do another or to give a false impression of being holy. The hypocrites acted out their faith in public to win favor with man. God looks at the heart of man and He knows our motives. Matthew 6: 5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then you're Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (MKJV) 4/ A hypocrite is someone who gives an of being holy 5/ Where should we pray? 6/ Should we use babbling in prayer? The Lords Prayer Jesus' followers asked Him how to pray. He responded by saying The Lord's Prayer. This was not meant to be just prayer to be recited over and over. But it's was meant to be a guide to help us know the kinds of things we can talk to God about and how we can talk to Him. (How to pray) Matthew 6: 9 Therefore pray in this way: Our Father, who is in Heaven, Hallowed be Your name. (MKJV) Gods name is said to be holy and given reverence, to lift His name up and to give Him respect, exalt and lift Him up. 7/ Who is our Father here in this prayer? 8/ Hallowed means to make Gods name and give Matthew 6:10 Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. (MKJV) This world is under the control of the devil the ruler of the kingdom of the air, (Ephesians 2:1) . He was cast out of heaven Isaiah 14: 12, and he is also called morning star. God is the ruler of heaven and of those who have asked Jesus to come into their hearts. It is important for us to understand that heaven is under God's will and we need to ask for God's will to be in our lives we need to surrender our wills to Him. We also need to pray that God's will be done in the world. 9/ We need to for God's Kingdom and rule to come into our life. 10/ What is another word for surrender? 11/ Does God force his will on us? Matthew 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread; (MKJV) Bread is regarded to our daily needs not to confused with our wants. It is Gods will to gives us blessings 12/ Can we ask God to bless us? 13/ What are some of our daily needs? 14/ Do we have a daily greed? Matthew 6:12 and forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtors. (MKJV) Various regulations as to the relation between debtor and creditor are laid down in the Scriptures. (A.) The debtor was to deliver up as a pledge to the creditor what he could most easily dispense with (Deut. 24:10, 11). (B.) A mill, or millstone, or outer garment, when given as a pledge, could not be kept over night (Ex. 22:26, 27). (C.) A debt could not be exacted during the Sabbatical year (Deut. 15:1-15). For other laws bearing on this relation see Lev. 25:14, 32, 39, Matt. 18:25, 34. (D.) A surety was liable in the same way as the original debtor (Prov.11: 15; 17:18). I believe that God want us to be prosperous and not to be in debt. Because Jesus said to forgive our debt and our debtors it appears this lending and borrowing causes problems. Maybe we should trust God in this matter. 15/ What are the two points made in verse 12 and
Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. (MKJV) The flesh of man is weak and we need the strength of Jesus to get through all temptation. Genesis 4:7 But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it. (NIV) If we sin we have walked out of the Kingdom of God 16/ What is weak in man? 17/ Sin is to have us. Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (MKJV) There is a lot to be said about this part of the prayer 18/ Firstly God is asking us to others who have done things that may have caused us some pain. 19/ Secondly our heavenly Father will our sins. 20/ Thirdly but if we don’t others we will still be held by our own sins and cannot be Matthew 18: 21 Then Peter came to Him and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Until seven times? 22 Jesus said to him, I do not say to you, Until seven times; but, Until seventy times seven. (MKJV) The meaning of the above scripture is that we are called to forgive and keep on forgiving.
