As disciples of Jesus, we need to understand that Jesus is the Word, and if we are to be effective witnesses, we need to have a good understanding of Scripture. The world is looking for answers to all its problems. The answer to all the problems of life are in the Bible. We need to direct people to the Word. Psalm 119:89 Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.(NIV) Psalm 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. (NIV) Mark 13:31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. (NIV) The word, Bible comes from the Greek word 'Biblia'. It means, 'books, Library'. The Bible is made of sixty-six books. There were approximately forty writers, but only one Author, God. 1/ How many books in the Bible? 2/ How many writers? 3/ Who is the author? John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.(NIV) 4/ Who was with God in the beginning? 5/ Who is the Word of God? John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."(NIV) 6/ Who is the light of the world? Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him, to whom we must give account. (NIV) 7/ The word of God is 8/ What is hidden from God? The joy that is the believers. Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. 4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. (NIV) 9/ What is another word for the law? The 10/ You will be like a 11/ Will you prosper if you stay in the word? Psalm 119: 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. 106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. (NIV) Psalm 119:130 The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. 131 I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands. (NIV) Psalm 119: 165 Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. (NIV) 12/ The word (Bible) is a 13/ I will follow your 14/ If you love the Word you will have great 15/ What is a different word for “pant” and “longing”? 2 Timothy 3:15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (NIV) 16/Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for 17/ All Scripture is 18/ Scripture is useful for (a) (b) (c) (d) in righteousness 19/ Who needs to be thoroughly equipped? James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does.
