The Old Testament has many stories, which have a prophetic edge to them. We can't say they are direct prophecies, but they are a type or picture of what was to happen in the New Testament. Another term for these events is a blueprint or forerunner of New Testament events. Exodus 3: 10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt. (KJV) God made three points to Moses and they are: 1/ Point 2/ Point 3/ Point In the above verse from Exodus we can see that God is using Moses to bring the Israelites out of Egypt. Egypt is a picture of the world, Israel is a picture of the Church and Moses is a picture of Jesus. 4/ Egypt is a picture of the 5/ The nation of Israel is a picture of the 6/ Moses was their saviour like is ours. Moses leads the people in their exodus from Egypt through the Red Sea. This meant there was no turning back to return to Egypt. That left the people totally under his leadership. The next event was that he led them to Mt Sinai where he received the Ten Commandments. Their spiritual guidelines had been set. Then Moses led the people for forty years in the wilderness wanderings. Finally Moses came to the River Jordan and handed the leadership over to Joshua. Deuteronomy 31: 1 Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: 2 "I am now a hundred and twenty years old and I am no longer able to lead you. The LORD has said to me, `You shall not cross the Jordan.' 3 The LORD your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the LORD said. (NIV) 7/What did God say to Moses? 8/ Who will cross over the river Jordan? Firstly Secondly Thirdly 9/ The Bible meaning for name Jordan is Now we come to the New Testament and we will look at pattern, which had been set out in the Old Testament, and is played out in the time of Jesus. The first thing we see is that God is well pleased in His Son, because he went through the waters of baptism in obedience to the Word of God, to fulfill all righteousness. Matthew 3:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."(NIV) 10/ What was Jesus reply to John? To fulfill all 11/ What did God say about Jesus? A B C 12/ Who is our example? 13/ Who do we follow? Now let us look at another example found in the New Testament. That is of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch. The eunuch was saved and baptized on the same day. Acts 8:34 The eunuch asked Philip, "Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?" 35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?" 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. (NIV) 14/ Did the eunuch become a believer? 15/ Did he get baptised the same day? Jesus said that we are to make disciples, then to baptize them, and then to teach them. It is clear that all believers need teaching. Matthew 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."(NIV) 16/ Verse 19 says that we are to A/ B/ C/ 17/ Baptizing them in the name of the If you don’t believe in Jesus, you are condemned to death for your sins. We are saved through believing in what Jesus did - plus nothing. So we need to be obedient to the Word of God and be baptized. Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptised will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (NIV) 18/ Who should get baptised? 19/ Should you get baptised? Baptism is to lay ones old life down in the waters of baptism and to be raised up with Jesus to be a new man. With our hearts we believe that Jesus is Lord, but the act of baptism is to show the whole world that we belong to Jesus. Therefore we are baptised into Jesus. Colossians 2:12 And when you were baptized, it was the same as being buried with Christ. Then you were raised to life because you had faith in the power of God, who raised Christ from death. (CEV) 20/ Who is raised with Christ? Ephesians 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, even as you are called in one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in you all. (MKJV) We show to all that we are in unity with Jesus when we go through the waters of baptism.
